It is difficult, if not impossible, to know just how many new amputees there are in Haiti at the present time. Post earthquake estimates from credible sources vary wildly and change weekly, initial estimates of four thousand now complete with more alarming estimates into tens of thousands. The purpose of the Haiti Amps project is to promote and support optimal recovery from loss of limbs.
A computerized registry: registration via mobile phone, amputee profiles self-reported in SMS format, creation of a data base in RapidSMS designed to facilitate better planning and execution of collaborative service provision by NGOs. Access to the collected data available via a Web dashboard (password protected access within a role permission system). The capacity to incorporate more detailed profile information of a clinical nature is also envisioned (info as entered by an aid worker for example), referral features for amputees as well. If exploited as intended by its stakeholders, the Haiti Amps Network should increase the likelihood for optimal recoveries amongst new amputees in the earthquake survivor community.
A Haitian with an amputee should be able to update the Registry via SMS. The system would know the amputeeās phone number, which would be linked to a registry entry that was protected to select users (Amputee NGOs, Haitian govt, hospitals). When a new NGO or hospital performs treatment on the Amputee or provides a new prosthetic, this could be easily sent and updated to the registry.
